Five stars to Matt and his team at Upright Health for all the help I got in dealing with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Just before starting with Matt and Kristen, I was walking with a limp and I couldn’t sit without feeling a constant pain in my right hip. I was waiting for my scheduled FAI surgery when I decided to give Upright Health a try. I soon cancelled my surgery and now, after eleven sessions over about three months, I can sit, walk, bike and pretty much do any normal activity with the confidence that I have a plan to help myself if any hip pain comes back.
The thing that stands out the most to me is Upright Health’s unique approach to addressing FAI. They understand that each person’s hip pain is different and so it takes time to figure out the weakness or deficiency that is causing the pain and the right way to balance that out. Sessions with Upright Health are completely dedicated to you, which gives them time to carefully monitor your progress, adjust your at-home exercises/stretches/tissue work and provide you an opportunity to learn as much as you can from what they know. On top of this, both Matt and Kristen have dealt with their own hip pain, and so not only did they have a personal connection to my hip issues, but they also gave me confidence that I could work through my issues without resorting to surgery.
For those that are going through this process, I think it’s important to mention that one weekend I drove for 5-6 hours in a cramped position and the level of my hip pain at the end of the weekend was so high that I was ready to throw in the towel and reschedule the FAI surgery. At that time I had made significant progress, but I wasn’t to the point where I really understood what was causing my hip pain. I’m glad I didn’t do that because within a few weeks I had a session with Kristen that ended up being the last piece that helped everything else fall into place. I think what helped me make the decision to stick with the program was knowing that others were able to break through their FAI pain, and so hopefully this helps you as well.
