Upright Health gave me my life back. Sounds dramatic, but that’s what it feels like. But let me back up…

I first came to see Matt Hsu a little over a year ago, nursing a sore hamstring and desperate for some improvement because I was training to row in the Head of the Charles Regatta which was just a few weeks away. Matt listened. Matt probed. Matt got to the heart of the issue. With some tissue work, I left feeling better, but more importantly I was better educated about what was going on and I was armed with “homework” to improve the situation.

Fast forward to this spring, when our rowing training geared up again in preparation for autumn regattas. I wanted a strength coach, but not just a dime-a-dozen, one-size-fits-all trainer. I wanted someone who really understood body mechanics and could help me use my body more effectively. I immediately thought of Upright Health. I started training with Josh Hash in April, and oh, what a difference it’s made.

What have I achieved in six months of training with Josh? Huge improvements in strength, flexibility, range of motion, posture and balance. But more importantly, my outlook has completely turned around. No longer do I worry how I’ll survive our next 14K meter erg workout. I’m setting new erg PRs regularly. Instead, I’m enjoying being more active again. I’ve gone from thinking my running days were behind me to realizing that lots of great runs are still in my future.

Josh has patiently pushed me to do more than I thought I could and explained every step along the way. He trains me to do the things I want to do, but he also trains me “for life,” ensuring that I’m keeping different muscle groups in balance, even ones I’d rather ignore. No, my 50-something body is not what it used to be – in fact, it’s better than it’s been in ages!  And how did my rowing team do this fall? We were “on the podium” at the Head of the Schuylkill, a nice improvement from our middle-of-the-pack performance last year. (And not bad for a team scattered all across the country which only practices together a handful of weekends each summer.) At this point, I feel like I’ll still be running and rowing in my 80s. Thanks to Upright Health, I’m psyched!
