Get your shoulders level

Imagine being the type of person who likes lifting weights, riding a motorcycle, and watching San Diego Chargers games. Now imagine not being able to do any of that comfortably because your back gives out every few months and stays out for about two weeks each time.

David didn’t have to imagine any of that. When he came into my office, he was in pain. His back had gone out yet again and this time wasn’t getting any better after a week of rest.  His performance in the gym had plateaued, as every time he pushed towards his limits, he’d pay for it at some point in the next two days with back pain.  He couldn’t ride his motorcycle without feeling extremely stiff and sore after less than an hour of riding.  He couldn’t sit comfortably at a Chargers game because his back would start acting up.

Here’s his story in his own words (as posted on Google Places):

For years I’ve suffered from lower back pain. As a 38yo man I would often wake up with a tightness and pain in my lumbar area. One morning on my way into the office I twisted to pick up my work bag and completely threw out my back. I couldn’t even stand up or walk normally. After seeing a chiropractor to no avail my back was still tight and I couldn’t walk. I decided I would give Matt a try even though I thought it was black magic.

After my free 30 minute consultation I left the office able to stand and walk again! It was amazing. Throughout the next few weeks he showed me 10 different exercises/stretches that further corrected my posture and eliminated the pain I had been experiencing for over 10 years.

Because of this therapy my posture is balanced and corrected. I can work out without pain and am stronger than before I started! I’m much more in touch with my body and know how to prevent future injury. I would highly recommend anyone experiencing back pain to make an appointment ASAP!

David’s whole body was twisting in ways that guaranteed that he’d experience recurrent pain. His shoulders, as you can see in the picture, were completely off kilter, putting uneven strain on his back and legs. His hips were shifted to the right, his shoulders shifted to the left, and the right shoulder dropped very low relative to the left shoulder.  While walking, he would drop all his weight into his right leg, his right shoulder would drop down, and his whole body would lean to the right while his upper body shifted a bit to the left. It was a limp, but not the kind you see with sprained ankles. It was the kind you see with muscles that are badly confused about how to work in unison.

With some dedicated effort to fix his own posture, David has put enough balance back into his posture to keep himself out of pain.  After less than two months after he first came into Upright Health, you can find him riding his motorcycle, doing deadlifts and bench presses at the gym, and waiting for the next football season to begin.
