Burn your pain as fuel

“We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” ~Kenji Miyazawa

I came across this quote last week and found it particularly poignant.

When I was in the worst throes of pain, I used to feel hopeless and helpless. There seemed to be nothing that could be done. The doctor’s orders were to rest and take pills and wait for things to get better, and things didn’t get any better.

All the other alternative medicine experts wanted me to become a patient for life because my body was apparently so broken that I’d need to rely on a team to help me stay just above the semi-functional line.

And all that made me angry. It made want to try harder and work smarter at getting myself out of pain. It made me want to learn how to keep myself out of pain. And ultimately, that anger, that burning desire to get out of pain GOT me out of pain.

Pain is just telling you that something is wrong. Embrace the pain. Figure out what it’s trying to tell you. Learn how to manage your body. And use that knowledge to live your life without pain!
